Mark Oliveiro - Australian Composer

Biography

 

 

Mark started composing at the age of fourteen experimenting with MIDI, electronic and computer composition. In the final years of high School in 2000-01 Mark commenced his studies of chamber and art music. His first large ensemble work, Battaglia for Orchestra hwas premiered by the NHSPA Student Orchestra in July of 2001. In that same year, his solo work, Images for Birds - for flute, was chosen to represent a high standard of student composition in the Higher School Certificate Music Standards Booklet in 2002.


Shortly after commencing a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of music, Mark was selected to represent the State of NSW at the ASME conference in Darwin, Australia, in a youth Composition Competition. The Darwin Symphony Orchestra then premiered his second orchestral work Divertimento at the final conference concert in June of 2002. During his time at the Sydney Conservatorium Mark received the Doris Burnett-Ford, Don Banks Memorial and Conservatorium Association scholarships.

 

In July of 2004 Mark was awarded entry into Australian wide orchestral workshop and his work was to be performed by Orchestra Victoria after the July workshops of 2004. Orchestra Victoria then workshopped his fourth orchestral work, Order of Chaos in January 2005. During and proceeding his study at the Sydney Conservatorium Mark was affiliated with and wrote music for the Sydney Eclectic Composer Society, Greenway Quartet, Nexas, the Singaporean Chinese Orchestra and Eclectic: Bit. In April 2006 Mark graduated with from the Sydney Conservatorium, with a Bachelor’s degree with first Class honours. He was also placed on the Sydney University Dean’s List of Academic excellence in 2006.

 

In August of 2006 Mark participated in the 3rd international workshop for Young Composers, at the Castle of Dundaga, Latvia. The ensemble Altera Veritas performed Mark’s small chamber work, Daina on the 18th of August in Dundaga and on the 14th of February in Riga. In September of 2006 Mark was selected to participate in the 45th International Festival Of Stresa, Italy. Here his new large chamber work, Bushfire Sun, was performed by the internationally renowned Norwegian chamber group, BIT 20 at the Villa Ponti.

 

From late 2007 to the present  Mark has been active as composer in residence at the Wells-Metz theatre in Indiana, USA. There he has worked on a number of productions including; Chekhov’s the Seagull, True West and Dr. Murray McGibbon’s adaptation of Hamlet.

 

In 2009 Mark will work closely with, and have his music premiered by, the Bourbaki Ensemble, the Song Company and Chronology Arts. Mark’s music has been performed in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Italy, Germany, Eritrea and the U.S.A.

 

Mark is a co-founder, and General Manager of the O-vation Group, one of Australia's most prolific music and entertainment providers servicing the music and entertainment, education and philanthropic sectors. Mark is now pursuing his Masters degree in Composition, on scholarship at the Jacobs School of Music at the University of Indiana where he has recently received the Dean’s Prize for Electronic Music.
